SW Card Deck: fish heart roughs

I am in final design stages of the "last" of the Heart suite cards. These roughs will form the "10 of hearts" card. I have eight cards left (of the 53 card set, Joker included) to design and draw.

Voting is still open on what the "backside" design of the card deck. scroll back a few posts to see the designs being voted upon. Currently "1C" and "2C' are tied thus far in votes. Excellent turn out thus far but there are lots of you that have not voted yet!!

I had a suggestion from a good friend to offer a different background to choose from when voting on the designs. So I came up with three. Black, White, and a colour blend. So instead of three choices, you now have nine. Voting will remain open until the end of January and i'll post a couple of reminders between now and then on FB on my page, the YRA page, andthe Sam's World page. Winning design will have its own post the first week of February.

So, I am going to be asking for some Sam's World fan participation!! I am in the designing stages of the "back side" artwork that will be used on the card deck. I am going to be featuring 3 designs. I am asking that the SW audience vote on the designs and I will use the design that gets the most votes. The designs will come out over the next couple of weeks and then I'll post all three together for a final view. The winner will be posted by the end of January. (Deadline for me to have the deck finished and submit to the printers)

new work that has been ongoing for a few weeks that I finally had the motivation to finish. (obviously I had consecutive days off from the day job!) I only used ONE brush pattern to do this piece. Lots of effects and many, many layers stacked, pieced, partial deletions, colour, and some processes accidental.  Enjoy!!

This project, Sam's World ideas, and Retail Xmas season is why there has been no "new" artwork posted on the YRA blog for a while now. 

I am about a third of the way through designing a 53 card deck based upon my Sam's World characters. The deck of cards is based upon the elements and what is associated with each suit. For example: 
Diamond is associated with the element Earth and will be represented by the stumps
Spade is associated with the element Air and will be represented by the birds
Heart is associated with the element Water and will be represented by the fishes
Club is associated with the element Fire and will be represented by the geckos
I will have one card designed for the "joker" and you can take a guess who/what character will represent that ;)
  All of the characters, with the exception of the Gecko, appear regularly in the SW strip. So the designing of the characters has been the easier step thus far.
  The design above is the final for the "six of spades" card. I will also include "named/wild cards" in the deck. (Suicide Kings, One-Eye Jacks and such) 
  Janice will be designing her own card deck as well and we will have these available (for purchase) at our show coming up in April. I will post "images" every now and then of card designs up until April

 I continue to have creative ideas for Sam's World toons and have started a new series called "The Weather Report". These are toons based upon weather folklore. These toons will start appearing in the new year.

I have hit a "block" when it comes to artwork I want to have on show for April. I cannot seem to get in a groove to get motivated to get new work started. Part of this is because of the Retail Christmas Season. This time of year, all my artwork suffers because I am so drained from work that each day I have off is spent in a chair, relaxing and/or sleeping trying to recuperate and get mentally ready for the next shift. If I get two days off in a row, that second day has a good chance of being productive for artwork.
  I do have a few abstract pieces that have yet to be seen publicly so I will have abstract paintings to show. Otherwise, I'll take it day by day and inspiration will come sooner or later...

This one will be the last of the new stuff for a while. I have some projects coming up that will take up all of my drawing time: These include:
1. a MAJOR redesign and rework of the Yelling Rabbit Artworks website
2. Two new SW projects that will see publication next year. One involves over 56 character designs and the other will be of poster size printing! I am hoping to have the first ready for April and the second sometime in the fall 2015.
3. This last one is probably the most time consuming: The Christmas retail season has begun.

Of course, should inspiration hit (and it usually does) I will post any and all new work and SW will still be posted as scheduled (well, as close to schedule as I remember to do it!)

So, if these posts do slow down, Happy Halloween, Happy Thanksgiving (US peeps), Merry Christmas, and have a Happy New Year!!

came up with a "title" for the number of pieces I am now doing under this "geometric shapes" theme, calling it simply the "G-series". I know, I put alot of thought into this title and struggle for days to come up with this title...

just as an aside, this particular piece began as my one thousand, three hundred and forty fourth abstract sketch or "abby". Until I come up with a title, all my abstract sketches, whether hand drawn or digital, are labeled as abby and given a number after scanning the drawing into the computer. 

This keeps the designs "organized" as files because I am usually working on several dozen at once.

Day 2 at Nose Hill Park. We were trying to get pictures of the wildflowers but gale force winds prevented us from taking pictures and presented the challenge of staying upright and not becoming a human tumbleweed... During our way back to the car, we came across this doe feeding about 30 yards of the path. Very difficult to take a picture of a moving object while being slammed with very gust winds!!

a second digital piece that is entirely digital in the process. As with the previous piece, I did not sketch an idea on paper and scan into Photoshop. Both works began as a blank file on Photoshop. It is something I have done before but was not comfortable with and I am still uncomfortable with. I still like to have some "traditional" in my artwork. So enjoy these pieces, this "completely digital" work will be few in numbers...
